Giuseppe lo Monaco is born 25 April 1889 in Corleone, the son of Biagio lo Monaco and Maria Concetta (it’s Maria Carmela in his parents’ marriage record) Mancuso. He is baptized on 28 April. His godmother is Giovanna Campo, who is unmarried.[1]
His sister, Maria, marries Ippolito lo Greco in Corleone in 1902.
Giuseppe arrives in New York on 25 August 1910 on the Europa. His brother in law paid his passage. He plans to join his brother in law Ippolito Greco at 257 E. 107th St.[2]
A member of Giuseppe Morello's gang, Ippolito is killed in 1915.
Joseph Lomonaco, age 28, registers for the draft for WWI on 5 June 1917 in New York City. He lives at 233 E. 107th St. He was born 25 April 1889 in Corleone, Palermo, Italy. He is a shoemaker employed by Rosenwasser Bros. in Long Island City. He supports his sister and five children. He is unmarried. Joseph is tall and of medium build with black eyes and hair.[3]
In the 1925 NY State census, on 16th St., in Brooklyn, Mary Greco, 39 (b. 1886), heads a household. She was born in Italy and her children at home were born in the US: Grace Greco, 17 (b. 1908), a dressmaker, John Greco, 14 (b. 1911), Millie Greco, 11 (b. 1914), and Paul Greco, 9 (b. 1916).
The next household is Joseph Lomonaci, 36 (b. 1889), a shoemaker, and his wife Millie, 22 (b. 1903), both born in Italy. Their children living with them were born in the US: Millie, 3 (b. 1922), and Jane, 2 (b. 1923). Also living with them is a cousin, Joseph Masi, 21 (b. 1904), born in Italy, a plasterer.[4]
